Swimming Lessons: Essential Skills to Teach a New Swimmer

Teaching a child to swim can be one of the most rewarding experiences for any parent or guardian. Not only does it nurture a love for water, but it also builds confidence and promotes safety awareness. In this post, we will explore the first essential skills every young swimmer should learn to ensure they enjoy their time in the pool and develop a strong foundation for aquatic activities.




Skill 1: Water Familiarization


Before a child dives into swimming, they need to feel comfortable in the water. Water familiarization introduces young children to water in a playful way. Activities like splashing water on their face, blowing bubbles, or simply walking around the water while holding your child is a great place to begin.


One fun activity is to use sinking toys in an area easily accessible to your child (for example: a pool step). Have them reach down and pick up the toy - gradually putting more and more of his/her face in the water.


When children enjoy their time in the water, they will naturally become more confident. This enjoyment makes them more likely to engage in the learning process and master new swimming skills.



Skill 2: Kicking


Kicking helps swimmers move effortlessly through the water. You can start by having your child sit on a pool step or the pool wall, and have them move their legs up and down making BIG SPLASHES! In fact, tell them to splash you and watch their reaction!


Starting with a seated wall kick is the first step to teaching the freestyle kick, while keeping them engaged.



Skill 3: Floating


Once your child is more comfortable in the water, the next step is teaching floating. Floating is foundational for many swimming techniques.


Have your child lie flat on their back in shallow water, providing support until they can maintain balance. Encourage them to relax their body while floating. Studies show that children who can float are 70% more likely to display confidence in their swimming abilities.


Floating not only boosts confidence but also teaches vital self-rescue skills. It instills a sense of buoyancy, crucial for progressing to more advanced skills.
